John Buchanan (13 October – 18 October ) was a New Zealand botanist and scientific artist. He was a fellow of the Linnean Society.[1]
Biography
[edit]Buchanan was born in Dunbartonshire, Scotland, and in his early life apprenticed as a calico pattern designer,[2] then was foreman of a drawing shop, with a hobby of botany.[1] He emigrated to Dunedin, New Zealand, in , in the early years of the Scottish settlement, and worked as a survey assistant and gold prospector during the Otago gold rush.[1][2][3] During this time, he was an amateur botanist, collecting plant specimens that he sent to John Ross, a friend in Scotland who was also an amateur botanist.[1][2] When James Hector was leaving Britain in to head the Geological Survey of Otago, Joseph Dalton Hooker, who had heard of Buchanan from Ross, suggested him to Hector as a botanist.[3] In Hector employed Buchanan as a botanist and draughtsman for his survey of Otago and the West Coast of the South Island.[1][2]

I'm a fan of historical fiction and science fiction. In San Antonio, Texas, where I grew up, I played sports, watched science fiction shows on TV, and played the drums in a garage band. I also read every biography in the library during fifth grade. Although I was a mediocre high school student, I managed to get into college at Southwest Texas State University, where I earned a Masters Degree in Biology. The degree was instrumental in starting my career as an environmental specialist. After working for the State of Texas and two consulting companies I started my own small business, Buchanan Environmental Associates. Along the way I picked up a guitar, learned some blues licks and ultimately co-founded a Pink Floyd cover band as the lead guitar player. Reading J. K. Rowling's entire series of Harry Potter books with my daughter started a two-year creative journey resulting in my first book, Jump Starting the Universe.
